If you import shower toilets or smart bidet seats into Europe, EN 1717 is the compliance standard that quietly decides whether your product is safe to connect to a drinking-water supply — and whether it can pass a market check. Almost nobody talks about it, but it is one of the strongest technical differentiators a supplier can prove.

What is EN 1717?

EN 1717 is the European standard for protection against pollution of potable water in water installations. It defines how devices connected to the drinking-water network must prevent backflow — water from your installation being sucked or pushed back into the public supply. The standard defines five fluid categories (from category 1, potable water, up to category 5, a health hazard) and the protection devices required for each.

In plain language: any appliance that mixes water with cleaning functions — a shower toilet, a bidet seat — must guarantee that the water which touched the nozzle can never flow back into the mains. The mechanism for this is usually an air gap or an equivalent backflow-prevention design. As the technical association DVGW and standard bodies like BSI document, backflow protection is a system-level requirement, not a component-level afterthought.

Why most suppliers get it wrong

The most common shortcut in the industry is simple: buy a check valve from a component supplier, bolt it onto the water inlet, and print "EN 1717 compliant" on the datasheet. This is the difference between owning a certificate and designing for compliance:

The market gap: nobody talks about it

In August 2026 we reviewed the FAQ and product pages of 16 European retailers and brands selling shower toilets and bidet seats — from French specialists to German and Dutch direct-sales shops. None of them publishes any guidance on EN 1717 or backflow protection. Not one. The standard that decides whether a product is safe on the European market is invisible to the buyers who need it most.

That is an opportunity for importers: a supplier who can explain EN 1717, show the technical file, and demonstrate the water path in the ceramic is a supplier who has actually done the engineering.

What importers should verify before buying

  • Ask for the full technical file — not a certificate image: test reports from an accredited laboratory, declarations of conformity, and the fluid category claimed.
  • Ask how the backflow protection is implemented — air gap in the ceramic casting, or an external valve? Ask for the water-path drawing.
  • Check the related standards — EN 1717 sets the framework; EN 13077 covers the air-gap device family used in WC installations. A complete EU file lists both.
  • Visit the factory and look at the water path — the ceramic casting tells the truth. A bolt-on valve is visible; designed-in protection is part of the mould.
  • Confirm the seat platform too — bidet seats connect to the potable supply as well and need the same system-level protection, not just a valve.

Is EN 1717 mandatory for shower toilets in the EU?

EN 1717 is the harmonised European standard protecting drinking water; any device connected to the potable supply with a wash function is expected to meet it. For an importer, it is a market-access question: non-compliant products expose you to liability and recall risk.

What is the difference between EN 1717 and EN 13077?

EN 1717 is the framework standard — it defines the fluid categories and the protection principles. EN 13077 is a product standard for a specific protection device family (air gap with non-circular overflow) used in WC and sanitary installations. A complete European technical file covers both.

How can I verify a factory genuinely complies?

Request the complete technical file including accredited test reports, ask for the water-path drawing showing how the air gap or equivalent protection is implemented, and ideally visit the factory to inspect the ceramic. If the supplier can explain the design, compliance is real; if they only produce a certificate, ask harder questions.

Does EN 1717 apply to bidet seats as well as complete toilets?

Yes. A bidet seat connects to the potable supply too, so it needs the same system-level backflow protection. This is why the ES seat platform carries EN 1717 rather than relying on a component valve.
