Here is the routine that European specialists consistently recommend.
The descaling schedule: every 6–12 months
Limescale is the number-one cause of premature failure. The industry-standard guidance, consistent across German, French and Czech specialists, is to descale every 6–12 months depending on water hardness, using a standard coffee-machine descaler or the manufacturer's recommended product. In hard-water areas (total hardness above roughly 30°), descale at the short end of that range — or rely on models with an automatic descaling program, which run the cycle with minimal effort.
Why it matters: scale builds inside solenoid valves and the instant heater, restricting flow and eventually blocking the fine nozzle orifices. As the water-quality certifier KIWA and standards body BSI document, drinking-water installations face the same scaling risk on their components.
The nozzle: self-cleaning by design, vinegar for deep cleans
Modern nozzles are designed to stay clean: they extend only during use, retract afterwards, and self-rinse before and after every wash, with antibacterial materials as standard. For a deep clean, the standard method used across the industry is:
- Shut off the water and run the self-clean purge.
- Unclip the nozzle (rotate 90° on most models).
- Soak it 10 minutes in white vinegar.
- Rinse, reassemble, and run the self-clean cycle for 2–3 minutes.
Monthly in hard-water areas; quarterly elsewhere is plenty.
The inline filter: every 2–3 months
An inline pre-filter protects the unit from rust, sludge and particles — especially after pipe bursts or mains work. The recommended change interval is every 2–3 months, and at least twice a year even in soft-water areas. Filters reduce scaling but do not replace descaling; both are part of the routine. Yes. Filters remove particles and some scale-forming minerals, but they do not eliminate scaling. Both tasks coexist: filter change every 2–3 months, descaling every 6–12 months.
Can I use any descaler?
Use a standard coffee-machine descaler (citric-acid based) and follow the model's instructions. Never run descaler through the electronics or leave it soaking longer than specified.
How do I know when it is time to descale?
